Key Biscayne
Locals to the greater Miami region call Key Biscayne “The Key”, and technically, Key Biscayne is the southernmost barrier island in America, and it is located in Miami. Key Biscayne has a relaxed pace of life, and this is because although it is just south of Miami Beach and Coconut Grove, there is only one highway that connects it to the mainland (Rickenbacker Causeway, which has a one dollar toll). People escape the city and flock to this convenient island paradise.
Key Biscayne has an exclusive residential community, and the multi-million dollar homes display a stunning variety of architecture. Besides being a home to the rich, Key Biscayne has sweeping beaches, top resort hotels, and great restaurants.
If day visiting Key Biscayne is more your forte, you can visit the Cape Florida Lighthouse, which is 95 feet above the ocean. The views from this vantage point here are totally worth the reward of climbing the stairs. This lighthouse has withstood every hurricane and storm to come its way – including the powerful Hurricane Andrew.
You can also visit the Miami Seaquarium, where Lolita the Killer Whale and Salty the Sea Lion resided. The popular TV show “Flipper” was filmed here in Key Biscayne, and the dolphin exhibits at the Seaquarium are sure to please. There is a shark channel that you can only cross by bridges, giving an unusual view of these apex predators. There are touch tanks, and a big stadium where water shows are performed (the first few rows are definitely a wet zone).
In the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Recreation area, you can barbecue, fish, swim, cycle, or snorkel around this pristine area of Key Biscayne. There are rentals for fishing equipments and bicycles. Crandon Park Beach is popular for its natural beauty, beautiful people, and stunning vistas.
