Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach

Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach
In the far northeastern corner of Florida, almost in Georgia, lies Amelia Island. This Island is famous for its nature, relaxing atmosphere, and world-class lodging. This island is not a hedonistic island like Key West, but for a sedate, restoring vacation, Amelia Island is as perfect as it gets.
On the Atlantic Coast, surrounded on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, and to the west by the St. Mary’s River, Amelia Island used to be the playground for only the rich, aristocratic class. After the turn of the century, the Island became a tourist destination for anyone looking for a change and a drive to return to nature; Amelia Island is still famous for its natural beauty even today. The beaches are divine, with white sand and tall Oaks with Spanish moss draped over their branches, and the sunshine is year round. The miles of uncrowded beaches give a sense of seclusion and complete getaway for the vacationers. This unspoiled island is easy to get to, affordable, and the premier destination for northeast Florida.
On Amelia Island is a quaint town called Fernandina Beach. This town is old fashioned; not much has changed since the turn of the century. The Palace Saloon is still standing and you can still get a drink there (interesting tidbit: on the last day before the Prohibition began, this pub raked in a whopping $60,000). Throughout the town there are antique shops and charming bed and breakfasts. The most famous of houses in Fernandina Beach is the Bailey House. Over a century ago, Fernandina city planners were improving the infrastructure on the island and opted to create better roads. There was a massive Oak tree located in front of the Bailey House, and the workmen wanted to chop it down. Mrs. Bailey disagreed with their intentions, and sat on her Verandah with a shotgun on her lap, challenging people to take their chances. The tree remains to this day (it is located on Ash Street), and the legend of Mrs. Bailey provided the backdrop for the popular eco-tourism this island experiences.
Amelia Island is an upscale resort island with fantastic hotels, golf courses, and spas. Some of the grandest resorts in Florida can be found on this tiny island (see our “Places to Stay” options for more details), and Amelia Island really flourishes on meaningful and tranquil fun. A unique option to Amelia Island is the availability of horseback riding on the beach – a rare treat in the United States. There are boat tours, fishing excursions, River Cruises and Charters, and State Parks for enjoyment. In our “Things to Do” and “Places to Eat” categories on our homepage, we have listed other attractions on Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach.
